ChinaSEO&BaiduOptimizationthat builds real digital presence in the Chinese market

Baidu keyword strategy, ICP filing, localised content — full-journey advisory for Taiwan brands entering China search.

Baidu's algorithm, ICP filing requirements, and the local content ecosystem are completely different from Google. Transplanting a Taiwan SEO strategy to China often yields zero rankings and no traffic. With 30+ years and 1,000+ companies behind us, we guide Taiwan brands from Baidu keyword research and technical compliance to localised content — building sustainable organic traffic in China's search market.

End-to-End Baidu Compliance Advisory

SEO That Actually Ranks on Baidu Starts From Three China-Specific Points

01THE COMPLIANCE LENS

ICP Filing Is Not Optional — It's a Prerequisite for Ranking

Overseas websites without an ICP licence load extremely slowly inside mainland China, and Baidu's crawler struggles to index them fully. Most Taiwan brands assume a simplified Chinese translation is enough; in practice, compliance is the biggest barrier. We guide brands from server location and filing to Baidu-specific robots.txt and sitemap setup — getting the compliance foundation right so subsequent SEO effort is not wasted.

02THE ALGORITHM LENS

Baidu's Ranking Logic Is Fundamentally Different From Google

Baidu evaluates external-link quality, original Chinese content, and page-load speed very differently from Google. Applying a Google SEO mindset to Baidu typically yields: no keyword rankings, traffic from wrong search terms, or zero clicks despite Baidu Index showing search volume. We use Baidu Webmaster Tools and Baidu Analytics data to craft keyword strategies and technical optimisations suited to Baidu's algorithm.

03THE CONTENT LENS

China Search Traffic Comes From a Local Content Ecosystem, Not Translations

High-ranking content on Baidu typically comes from Zhihu, Baidu Baike, official WeChat accounts, and local blog cross-citations. Translating Taiwan website content directly rarely earns rankings on Baidu. We plan a localised content strategy for brands: which keywords are worth targeting, which platforms (Zhihu / Baike / Tieba) multiply reach, and how to embed brand information into the China search ecosystem for long-term, compounding organic traffic.

Localised Content Placement

Hire a vendor and you get a website in simplified Chinese. Work with Joseph and you get a strategy built from three real China-market dimensions — compliance, algorithm, and content — designed to sustain organic traffic on Baidu.

Three Things Most Agencies Skip — But You Should Demand

Compliance First, Technical Foundation Solid

ICP filing, server compliance, Baidu indexing confirmation — many agencies go straight to keywords, skipping the technical and compliance foundation. We insist on completing a technical audit and compliance check for every engagement, ensuring crawlers can reach pages and pages load fast — so keyword and content work is not built on sand.

Baidu-Data-Driven, Not Gut-Feel Keyword Selection

Keyword strategy must be grounded in Baidu Index, Baidu autocomplete, and competitor analysis — not translated from Google Keyword Planner's Taiwan data. We research search behaviour with Baidu Webmaster Tools and local toolsets, so you target what Chinese users actually search, not simplified-character translations of Taiwanese vocabulary.

Local Content Ecosystem Integration, Not Just On-Site Optimisation

High-traffic Baidu rankings often come not from an own website but from the external ecosystem — Zhihu, Baidu Baike, brand reputation sites. We plan off-site localised content placement for brands, embedding brand information across multiple nodes of China's search ecosystem so exposure enters Baidu's organic results from multiple channels, not just one website fighting alone.

The Right China SEO Strategy for Your Market Stage

Different stages of China entry need different SEO focus. See which one fits, and we'll confirm the right scope together during consultation.

Scenario A: Just Starting — Get Found First

  • Brand hasn't entered China yet — needs technical compliance and basic indexing first
  • For: Taiwan brands preparing to go overseas, companies newly setting up in China
  • Recommended: ICP filing advisory + technical SEO audit + Baidu indexing confirmation

Scenario B: Already in Market — Traffic Not Arriving

  • Website has a simplified-Chinese version, but Baidu rankings are negligible and keywords bring no traffic
  • For: Taiwan brands with a Chinese website but poor search visibility
  • Recommended: Baidu keyword strategy overhaul + localised content optimisation + competitor analysis

Scenario C: Going Deep — Build Long-Term Search Assets

  • Have basic rankings — want to systematically scale organic traffic and build search brand equity in China
  • For: brands with an established China business looking to deepen digital presence
  • Recommended: local content ecosystem (Zhihu / Baike / Tieba) + long-tail keyword expansion + Baidu Analytics advisory

What Our Clients Say

We applied our Google SEO approach to Baidu and got nowhere. Joseph restructured the keyword strategy and discovered we had been targeting terms Chinese users simply don't search.

We thought ICP filing was impossibly complex. Joseph mapped out the entire process and helped us pick the right server location — cutting our China page load from 8 seconds to under 2.

They didn't just optimise the website — they planned our Zhihu and Baidu Baike content placements, so our brand has more entry points in Baidu's search results. That was something we hadn't thought of ourselves.

Build the compliance foundation before Baidu can see you

A Taiwan OEM-to-OBM manufacturing brand had an English website and traditional-Chinese version and planned to enter China to generate B2B enquiries. A pre-launch audit found: ICP filing incomplete, server hosted in Taiwan causing page-load times over 10 seconds inside China, and Baidu crawl rates near zero. We guided the ICP filing process, advised on server location, and configured Baidu sitemap and robots.txt — completing technical compliance before moving to keyword strategy, giving all subsequent SEO work a stable foundation.

Cross-Border E-Commerce Brand|Keyword Overhaul From Taiwan Vocabulary to China Search Context

What Chinese users search is fundamentally different from translated Taiwan terms

A cross-border e-commerce brand had a simplified-Chinese website yet zero Baidu keyword rankings. Root cause: the keyword strategy directly carried over Taiwan Google SEO terms that had negligible Baidu Index in China and were unfamiliar to Chinese users. Using Baidu Index and competitor analysis, we researched the actual search behaviour of target audiences in China, established a rankable keyword map with genuine search volume, and rewrote localised content so website pages truly matched Baidu users' search intent.

Zhihu and Baidu Baike give the brand more entry points in the search results page

A B2B tech brand had basic website SEO rankings but only its own domain on the results page, while competitors occupied multiple slots through Zhihu Q&A and Baidu Baike entries. We planned an off-site content placement strategy, helping the brand establish relevant Q&A on Zhihu and supplement product entries on Baidu Baike — giving the brand multiple positions on the Baidu organic results page and more channels to reach potential clients.

Consumer Goods Brand|Integrated China SEO Strategy Before Market Entry

Clarifying strategy before entry is more efficient than fixing it after launch

A Taiwan consumer goods brand was evaluating a China entry and wanted to complete SEO planning before its official website launched. Starting from a market diagnosis, we mapped target-audience search behaviour, confirmed the ICP filing route, planned Baidu-friendly website architecture settings, and scheduled the post-launch content placement timeline — giving the brand a complete SEO action plan from day one of going live, avoiding the cost and ranking delays of retroactive fixes.

Service Industry Brand|Baidu Analytics Implementation & Conversion Path Analysis

Without data, you don't know which keywords actually drive enquiries

A brand with service locations in China had website traffic but low enquiry rates, with no trackable data on user paths after landing. We implemented Baidu Analytics, set up conversion events (form submissions, phone-button clicks), and built a KPI tracking dashboard — giving the owner clear visibility into which keywords drive real enquiries and which pages lose users before conversion, so SEO strategy and page design adjustments are data-driven rather than based on intuition.

China SEO Common Questions

How is China SEO different from Taiwan SEO?+
China's main search engine is Baidu, not Google; the two differ significantly in algorithm, ranking signals, and user behaviour. Baidu places stronger weight on original Chinese content quality, localised external links, and technical page stability (load speed inside China). Operating a website in China also requires an ICP licence, otherwise access is very slow and indexing by Baidu is difficult. Transplanting a Taiwan Google SEO strategy to China typically fails to produce effective rankings.
What is an ICP licence and does a Taiwan brand definitely need one?+
ICP filing is the registration requirement from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for websites hosted in mainland China. If a website is hosted on a mainland server, an ICP licence is mandatory for legal operation. If hosted overseas (e.g. Taiwan), filing is technically not required, but user access is typically very slow and Baidu crawl rates are affected, in turn harming rankings. Most brands serious about China SEO are advised to at least achieve fast in-China accessibility and consult on whether ICP filing applies to them.
How does Joseph help businesses with China SEO?+
We offer full advisory from technical compliance audit (ICP confirmation, in-China server accessibility, Baidu indexing), Baidu keyword research and competitor analysis, localised content strategy (including Zhihu and Baidu Baike placement), through to Baidu Analytics implementation and KPI tracking. We scope services to match a brand's China-entry stage — from starting out to going deep — rather than offering one-size-fits-all packages.
How long does China SEO take to show results?+
Technical compliance (ICP licence, Baidu indexing) typically takes 1-3 months for baseline setup. Keyword rankings depend on competitiveness, content quality, and accumulated external resources — generally 3-6+ months before stable results appear. External content ecosystem placements (Zhihu, Baike) typically enter Baidu's index relatively quickly after publication, but building overall search brand equity in China is a cumulative long-term process, not a short-term traffic spike. We provide expected timelines and KPI targets at the start of every engagement.
How is the China SEO fee structured?+
The fee depends on scope: a one-off technical audit and strategy plan, versus long-term advisory with ongoing execution (content placement, monthly optimisation, reporting)? A brand just starting with baseline compliance, or one with basic rankings looking to deepen and scale? We don't post flat pricing — we start with a market diagnosis to understand your situation and goals, then give a clear quote. Book a free diagnosis via the form below.
Can we work together if we don't know the China market at all?+
Absolutely. Our service is designed to start from "knowing nothing." During the market diagnosis, we walk you through the fundamental rules of China's search market, the competitive landscape in your industry, and the priority questions for market entry — so you build understanding of China's digital market progressively through the engagement, rather than just receiving a report you can't interpret.
